My fascination with kimonos started a long time ago as I read the book “Memoirs of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden. A few years later a film came out which – to my surprise – was even better than the book. And this is not often the case!
The description of the Geisha style and the art of dressing kimonos were so inspiring that I read the book nearly in a few hours. I have never read a book so fast before. The book is full of silk kimonos in all colors and different styles. I was stunningly impressed by the movie later on, where the kimono art was portrayed so perfectly.
Since this time I admire the Geisha style and in particular the kimonos. I would never think that the kimono would become a world-wide fashion one day. Last year I bought one and I am so happy this trend has been kept until this summer.
A kimono — literally translated as “the thing worn” — is a traditional Japanese garment defined by its straight seams, “T” shape, and intense decorative detail. It first emerged in the Heian period in Japan, which lasted from 794 to 1192, but it wasn’t until the late 16th century that the articles of clothing began to resemble the long, hanging ensembles we recognize today.
Throughout most of the history, kimonos have remained relatively consistent in their structure and silhouette. The “T” shape of the kimono rarely changes. What differentiates are details in the fabrics, colors and patterns. And this is what I love about kimonos. My favorite are the ones made of silk, with extraordinary patterns. If you are asking me why I am so obsessed with kimonos here my answer.
Three reasons why I love wearing kimono
1. It fits to everyone
Kimono pays little attention to the body of the wearer. It is hanging loosely and camouflaging the figure beneath. It basically fits to everyone.
2. Light and easy to wear
Most of high quality kimonos are made of silk or any other light fabric. This is why it feels like wearing nothing at all and therefore best option for warm summer days. Just throw it over whatever you wear.
2. It styles up your look
Regardless of what you are wearing underneath, a kimono will style up your look immediately. Either with the jeans, skirt or legging – when combined with a kimono every outfit instantly looks fabulous! You can wear it at home, on the beach or when going out for a party.
A kimono is an easy way to change your outfit.
A kimono I am wearing here is from Mes Demoiselles Paris and it is made of silk. It is from last year´s collection, but you may check an update on their website.
